Hey guys,

Our Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo (4.0) was written off in an accident.

I've bought a Volvo V50 T5 (2.5 Turbo), which calls for 0w30 a5/b5.

In the garage I still have 3 x gallons of Amsoil 10w40 premium protection in stock.

The Volvo looks pretty clean, very small amount of sludge in the oil cap. My other vehicles were bought with fewer kilometres and were spotless.
When I first got the Volvo home I did a Liqui-Moly Flush Plus and filled with some Amsoil Series 3000 5w30 I had in stock which is primarily a Diesel oil but thought it might clean it up a little.
2000km later I've decided to dump that oil and filter.

I think perhaps that the 10w40 will be ok, perhaps when I run out of it, I'll use Castrol Edge 0w40 which is readily available.

Please let me know your thoughts.

From the '04 XC70 owners manual in the USA, 2.5 turbo, 10w30 is acceptable between -4*F and 104*F, 5W-40 is acceptable between less than -22*F to 104*F.

The latest oil fill for our XC70 is Mobil 1 0W-40. These Volvo turbo engines can sludge the PCV system. Quality oils and appropriate (less than 5000 mile) changes are recommended.

I change six monthly (approx. 5000km/3100mi)

Temperature averages here in Sydney Australia are 23c/74f in January down to average 13c/56f. Probably great conditions for oil, not too hot, not too cold?

Our only issue is that it gets a few short trips maybe once or twice a week and then driven hard once a month.

I'll see if I can find a 0w30.

Thanks.

My 2013 Isuzu Dmax 4jj1 3.0 turbo diesel gets 15w40 Mobil Delvac every 5000km, which is every 3 months.

Hey Mate, sorry to hear about your Falcon XR6 Turbo, nice fast car.

It's pretty hard to find a 0w30 in Oz, so I would use a 5w30.

Valvoline make a full synthetic SynPower FE 5w30 that is A5/B5 and easy to find at places like SuperCheapAuto.

In Sydney temps, I don't think there is any advantage to a 0W oil and a 5W will work fine.

0w-30 is both overpriced and overkill for the Sydney climate.

Agree with others, and suggest a 5w30 or 10w30. It seems as though A5/B5 oils are practically any of the "energy conserving" oils, so you should be alright with whatever, really.
At such a short change interval, you shouldn't need to worry about spending nearly double on synthetics. You could quite safely go longer than that, but whatever works is fine.

Diesel oil may be overkill for such a mild climate - not sure what Volvo has to say about -40 weight oils, but its probably un-necessary.

I used to put Castrol Edge 0w40 in the xr6t until it got bigger injectors, hf cat and intercooler. After that I ran Edge 10w60 until I stopped driving it so hard for so long and switched to the Amsoil PP 10w40.
I ended up putting this 10w40 in the Volvo last night as its still warm in Sydney for another month anyway, and no one on here freaked out at the thought

I guess I could go Edge 5w30 for the long term, but use up the last 1.5 gallons of the Amsoil next summer.

Yeah I'm sure it will be fine on the Amsoil 10W-40.

Castrol Edge 5w30 A3/B4 is a great oil that should serve you well.

I'm an Edge 10W-60 man myself, I have used more Castrol 10W-60 oil than any other oil. Right now I'm going through a "Lite" phase, using Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 with Edge 5w30 lined up as my next change.

A3/B4 may well be "superior" to the A5/B5 stuff Volvo recommends simply because its more shear-resistant and suitable for long drains, too.

Seems like a reasonable plan
