Today I went outside to do some yardwork. I have 2 lawnmowers and due to not having a garage, both where stored outside for the winter.
One is a John Deere 22inch 7.0hp Briggs&Stration engine.
Other is a old Craftsman 22inch 6.75hp Tecumesch engine.
As stated they where both stored outside over the winter. I went out today checked oil levels in both which was fine. On both, I removed the spark plug sprayed some starter fluid in and some PB Lawn Mower Tune up in the spark plug hole. I had some gas from last fall, I poured a couple of ounces of MMO in the gas and gassed both up.
The JD started on the third pull.
The Craftsman's took about 10-15 pulls, but fired over.
A little white smoke on both for a minute or two, then no smoke.

Please don't hate me for my storage of them outside, I have no garage.
Needless to say I was shocked and awed by both of them starting.
All I can say is WOW.

Yeah I did that with my rototoller. Put a tarp over the motor, weighted down with bricks. Left it out all winter. Just saw the handles poking up through a snow drift at times. Still hanging tough.

I had some amazing luck with both of my lawnmowers today.
Both had been stored outside all winter.
Both started with just a little luck from MMO in the gas and some starting fluid squirt in the spark plug hole.

What exactly is Marvel Mystery Oil?
We don't get it in Canada and I'm inherently biased against it because out of the three words in it's title, two of them are major red flags; "Marvel" and "Mystery".

"Step right up, folks! Try our new engine elixer! You'll be AMAZED. It's a Marvel! It's a Mystery!"

I only used the MMO because I did not add Stabil to the gas last year. The gasoline was from last summer. I know old gas can gum up carbs on small engines

Have to agree , you're giving the MMO a bit too much credit....it really did nothing .
I hope you cover your machines when not in use , rain just as well as any snow will get into the fuel tank not to mention condensation which you can lessen if you keep them full which stops air from getting into them due to no space for it.

Not saying a little MMO may clean the fuel system but using a fuel stabiliser and filling the tanks when you store them likely does just as well to prevent any problems when starting them in the spring . And during the off season if you get a warm spell starting them a few times is good too .

Sorry, but you misread it. It's Marvel Misery Oil, LOL.

I don't see how MMO did anything. Both mowers fired up from the squirt of starter fluid and the PB tune up. They also started up with the old gas that was in the fuel lines and ran for several seconds before the mix of MMO and gas eventually made it into the combustion chamber.

I agree, too much credit to MMO.

Like the others and I don't mean this in any negative way whatsoever, but I'm not sure why you think a mower starting up after sitting outside all winter is amazing. I've stored my various lawnmowers outside, on the side of the house all year long for about 20 years now under a plastic tarp. Never had an issue with them not starting. Never even thought I would have an issue.

As much as I use MMO sounds like it didn't help much. My mower is stored open to the elements but is halfway stored in my redneck outbuilding. Always start on the 2nd pull.. With out without MMO.

Am I the only one to question starter fluid squirted into the spark plug hole on initial start up? Ether is a solvent, that will affect cylinder wall lube on start up after an extended storage interval. I do like MMO but I have to question the starter fluid in a cylinder instead of the carb.

goodness. let him breathe.

glad you got them started! I doubt it was the MMO, but it's always nice when you can get them going after they've set up for a while. good advice up above-- use a tarp, fill the tanks, run stabil in the fuel before storing them. happy spring!

My Cub Cadet started are first pull after sitting all winter -- with gas from last Fall. I didn't touch the plug, didn't touch anything. I checked the oil, pulled the choke, and it started on 1 pull. No MMO -- just Stabil in gas. It was store in a shed all winter -- which is not insulated.

Same here, but I didn't even add Stabil when I put it up. Its only a few months anyhow.
