out/off: 8 quarts dealer bulk 0w-20 with ACDelco PF63

in/on: 8 quarts HPL PCEO 5w-40 with Carquest Extended Protection P84502

looks okay, leaf spring ruffled pretty well. Bean counters made me let this truck go to the dealer for its first free oil change or it would’ve been HPL at 12 miles.

That does not look like a spring. It looks like a support to hold the filter element against the top of the filter. No reason to have a spring there other than to supply a bit of tension.

I always use OEM filters on a car that's under warranty. In case of a serious engine failure of some sort,,,I don't want the dealership throwing that back in my face. Not worth the aggravation. I know there are much better filters out there in filterland, but not while under warranty.

It is a leaf spring (the filter industry calls it that) because is flexes and therefore puts force down on the filter canister to hold all the guts tight inside the can.

So GM uses these filters exclusively on everything they build. ZR1 Corvettes to Cadillac’s CT5-V Blackwing and there are comments that these filters are made well?

This is the kind that can have the adbv shifted to not seal the base holes. It depends how narrow the bean counters decided to make the element. Or by luck tne element fell to the center when they assembled the can. Not a filter to use without knowing.

From the patent of the ecore with combo valve around 2003 to illustrate Fram is not doing things like they should now. Before, Champ Labs knew the element should be centered since there is no base plate centering on this design. Now, they made it even worse as they enlarged the base holes so they are further out and more likely to be uncovered by the adbv. Plus they removed the end cap projections. They must have fired the experienced and brought in newbies.

“The projections 56 are adapted to abut the interior of the housing 12 to facilitate assembly of the filter means into the housing 12 and to properly position the lower portion of the filter means in the housing 12. The recesses 13 in the housing 12 will normally engage the top end cap 50 and help to properly position the upper end of the filter means in the housing 12.”

Yeah, it’s a stamped spacer. It’s popular here to call it a spring.
It's defined as a leaf spring in the oil filter industry, because it is a leaf spring. A spacer doesn't flex ... a spring does. It needs to flex to put a good amount of pressure on the guts of the filter to hold everything tight.

I guess what I'm getting at is.

Is it just that the spring in this case is ugly, or is there some part of it that won't perform as designed so long as the element is centered in the can?

The area around the bypass looks good at least.

Just being completely candid, looking at the bypass piece seal area my speculation topic AC Delco ( Champ Labs made) would fail a flashlight test. If one is fine with that, then continued use fine too. For me though, it would be a no go.

Thanks for c&p.
I actually cut one open on a previous post, and it did not fail the flashlight test.
