out/off: 8 quarts HPL PCEO 5w30 with Fram Titanium FS10575

in/on: 8 quarts HPL PCEO 5w-40 with Carquest Extended Protection P84502

looks amazing, leaf spring wasn’t wavy and those fat wire backed pleats always look great.

5w40 wow don't they call for 0w20? Have you noticed any difference in performance?
I've been using 40 instead of 20 in mine for years and never felt a performance difference and my mpg drop was 0.1 tank average. The engine is much quieter at hot idle and hardly burns too.

haven’t noticed a drop in performance for any of the vehicles i dump 5w-40 in but it is very hot in houston so YMMV in a more reasonable climate.

the engines are much quieter idling and i sleep well knowing there is a hths in the ~4.2 range when these trucks are beat on towing/hauling loads then idled all day. i had been using 5w30 in them until GM approved 0w-40 in the 6.2L. same bearing clearances so i jumped up another grade. i do believe 5w30 would suffice but 5w-40 gives them more breathing room if there is some fuel dilution and oil burning.

All modern engines coming out of the factory all have the same basic journal bearing clearance range (and it's a pretty narrow range), and it really hasn't changed in decades. Journal bearing clearance has been in the necessary sweet spot range for decades ... it can't be too tight or too loose to work over a large range of oil viscosity. Journal bearings on the tight side can tolerate a wider range of viscosity than bearings on the loose side. Loose bearings don't like thinner viscosity. And you can only make journal bearing so tight before they will run too hot and destroy themselves.
