ACDelco PF24 oil filter after 100 break-in miles

After installing a new camshaft, new lifters, and reworked heads, I ran this ACDelco PF24 Professional filter on my 1966 Pontiac GTO for about 100 miles. I was pleased that I couldn't find any trace of metallic particles inside this filter, but there appears to be a generous coating of moly-based assembly lube deposited and stuck to the inside the filter's can.

The anti-drainback valve was very pliable and the media was in good condition -- no tears or separation found. I guess you'd expect this with only 100 easy, break-in miles on the filter.

I used Shell Rotella T 15w40 motor oil, fortified with a 4-oz bottle of ZDDPPlus engine-oil additive to boost the zinc and phosphorus levels. When I changed the oil and this filter at about 100 miles, I used the same concoction and a new ACDelco PF24 Pro filter and will change again after 1,500 more miles.

Enjoy the photos:

What size engine in your Pontiac? 389 or 400? What camshaft did you install? Any reason you chose to go flat tappet vs roller? I wish you all the luck and continued success with your new camshaft!

As I recall, the center tube had genuine holes punched through it -- not louvers. I'll try to get a photo of the tube for you soon.

Why is this car not in your sig and can you post some nice exterior shots? It looks like a Tripower 1966 GTO in Montero Red with AC but it would be nice to see the whole car. I think there is a picture forum on this site to post the shots.

The engine in my 1966 GTO is a 389. I installed an OEM replacement GM #9779068 camshaft - exactly the cam the factory installed back in November, 1965 when the car was built. Everything on the car is as close to original as possible, so I kept the flat-tappet setup with original hydraulic lifters. It runs very well.

I'll find some pics and will post soon. Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for posting, Exit32.

My first car was a '70 Grand Prix, so I recognized the part #. Your engine pic showed up as I was wondering what application.

Post more photos if you can!

That is Light Blue Metallic, used on 1966 to 1970 Pontiac engines.

Oh that's not your e core variety ac delco. Looks really good

Not it isn't and agreed. Pretty clear looking at this one why many long time GM owners and ACDelco filter users prefer this 'classic' style of construction over an ecore. I do too.

Thanks for pics.

I've got a cheap eBay endoscope and used it to snap this photo of the inside of the center tube of my slightly used ACDelco PF24 Professional oil filter. The holes in the center tube appear to be cleanly punched, and I'd guess each hole is about 3/16" diameter.

The 068 tripower cam is what's in my 389 also. Factory grind flat tappet cams are the only way to go but only a true Pontiac enthusiast understands why.

I'll have to work on my sig to include more of my little fleet here.

Yes, my '66 GTO is Montero Red, and it's an original Tripower car (see window sticker below). It's an unusual "muscle car" because it's equipped with Tripower and factory A/C plus automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, tilt wheel, etc. I don't know who originally ordered this vehicle, but they bought and paid for a lot of optional equipment!

Should have ordered the disc brake option. Someone chucked the "wheel discs-wire" which looked liked c*@# on that vehicle anyway. And old smuck here special ordered a 66 Dart which turned out to be a pos.

I see plenty of burrs. Very rare to find any center tube with punched out holes that doesn't have some kind of burr around the hole circumference.

Spectacular! One of the best 66 convertibles I have seen and I travelled in the Pontiac circles (owner, Tiger Run, GTOAA Nationals etc.) for over 30 years.
