Just found this site which gives a listing of commercial brake fluids.
http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/standard/petro/bfbrands.html

The basis of their being "acceptable" is probably the result of some laboratory testing to certify that the fluids meet a sampling of the tests that are called out under SAE J1703 or J1704. The State of Florida for many years has conducted routine testing of motor fuels, oils, and other products to determine whether the produt in question meets the industry standard. On the above site, you can switch to their listing of acceptable antifreezes.

I'd be interested in what DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid did NOT pass their test. All the brands I've seen in these parts (I just did a brake line bleed and used Pyroil DOT 3) are all on the list.

I agree. Speaking of brake fluid, I saw a quart of Prestone synthetic DOT 3 at Wallyworld for $3.77. Is this a good brake fluid? How's the price?

Thanks for the link. I find it interesting that the Peak Lifetime Antifreeze passes. I would like to use this. I am just a little bit leary of it truly being lifetime.

It looks like they just test to make sure it passes general quality standards. I don't think they are confirming/denying that it is a lifetime fluid.

In reviewing some of their background information, for antifreeze they conduct tests for corrosion, freeze point, boiling point, and chemical content. For brake fluids, they conduct tests for boiling point, elastomer swelling, and chemical content. I don't think they list which brands did not meet this abbreviated testing program.

UH-OH, now I'm worried, GS610 and Neo 610 are not listed!
