Well my buddy who had the '85 sold the '85 as a roller and bought an '87. The other car was a bit of a stripper/drag car. This one is stock inside and out with the only mods being to the powertrain.
Came with a T5Z transmission and a built 302 that burned a fair bit of oil.
He had pulled the engine from the '85 before selling it, as the plan was to put it in this car.
So, Friday after work, we started:
This is what happens when you get a plug fouled with oil and the only thing going into the cylinder is air and fuel:
After we pulled the engine, I had my buddy start stripping the oil pan and stuff off the old engine to put on the new one before I would seal it up and we'd start putting things back together. While he was doing that, I got curious and tore into the old one, hence the pictures above. However, the bore was a bit more telling:
The scratches to the right of the centre-line will readily catch your nail, they are quite deep. Didn't have enough time today to pull the crank and the rod caps to get a peek at the rest of the piston. I figure it may have a broken oil ring since it apparently passed a leak-down test and showed good compression.
This isn't however a stock shortblock, as those are NOT stock pistons. So this may be "Fred's home rebuild" as well. I'm a big fan of stock shortblocks..... 87-92.
Anyway, after wrestling it back together yesterday, today things were finished up and we got her running:
The engine that went in has a custom cam, TFS heads, link-bar lifters and a low-mileage stock shortblock ('88). It runs VERY well and was a very strong motor in the '85.... Which was purchased with a blown motor; the stock shortblock was actually picked up on the way to get that car, LOL!
Timing cover, oil pan, front dressing, intake, distributor....etc were all swapped from the engine that came out onto this engine.
It will later get injectors, MAF, PMS and a TFS-R intake. But that won't be until next year, car is headed for hibernation tomorrow.
