Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement stone (coarse) for my DeWalt grinder? The one that came on it was never really round... probably more to do with the center hole or the shaft of the grinder.
Norton makes some great stones. I'd recommend the 'friable' types (I think that's what they're called). White & pink wheels are available in various grits and work far better than the cheap grey ones commonly found.
You'll need a dressing tool to touch up the wheel every now and then.
The one I use is about 5/8" tall and an inch or so wide. The face is impregnated with industrial diamonds. When the wheel gets glazed or uneven, you press the tool against the spinning wheel and it removes the glaze, exposing a fresh surface. There is another type that is a single point, either carbide or diamond. Rockler and Woodcraft will carry grinder wheel dressing tools.
I press lightly and move it back and forth across the face of the spinning wheel. The tool is resting on the grinder's tool fence to support it. Don't hand hold it! Keep grinding away at it until you see new grit exposed.
+3 on the Norton wheels. I have some pink and blue ones here and they perform noticeably better than the gray ones that came on the machine.
Once i got them true they have stayed that way and run very smooth. A couple of good articles.
