Is anybody here using it, and if so what brand and in what engine?

It seems like a grade that's very easy to get but I can't think of much that uses it.

The 5W50 I have seen in the USA is Castrol Syntec. M1 does not sell their 5W50 in the USA and Schaffers only sells theirs in a 55 gallon drum.

So Castrol, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil, ConocoPhillips and now Valvoline all have a 5W-50 offering, none of it except the Motorcraft packaged stuff is rated to the 5W-50 required by Ford, and what else takes it or who else is using it?

I have an easier time getting Mobil 1 5W-50 than Pennzoil 5W-20 here.

So anyone in the USA that can buy M1,PP or Valvoline 5W50 retail please chime in? I would love to know where I can find this stuff since Ihave never seen it in the USA. I know it is available outside the USA. ALso how come Schaeffers does not bottle their 5W50 in quarts?

Demand. The 9001 is way done the list of products sold by Schaeffers.
It is available in 5,30,55,275 gallon containers.

I have seen M1 5w-50 many times over here, and have wondered whether it would be OK to use in my camry 2AZ-FE. According to my manual, I could... based on temperatures, but many people have warned against using 40 or 50 weights in this engine.

Hi,
M1 5W-50 is a WW product of ExxonMobil and I cannot understand why it is not sold in the USA

As mentioned earlier it has been sold here in OZ for well over a decade and has had Porsche Approval since 1997 or so. It is the only SAE50 lubricant with Porsche Approval and has been since MY99

I have used M1 5W-50 in a variety of engines etc. (Toyota, ISUZU, Mitsubishi, RoadRanger and other gearboxes etc.) but not in recent years as I prefer either the 0W-40 or 5W-40 (Delvac 1) versions

M1 5W-50 is an excellent product with an extensive user base and is the best selling version of M1 in OZ I believe

doug,

Have you ever come across Mobil 1 10W-30 down here?

I use a little synthetic 5W-50 (lots of VII's) with my 5w30 conventionals to increase the viscosity a little.

Hi,
crinkles - Yes M1 10W-30 is usually readily available. It was/is a Holden factory fill IIRC

M1 0W-40 would be a good choice for your car IMO if you wished to use a SAE40 lubricant

other than the cold flow properties (which I believe would be superior for a 0w compared to 10w) is there any benefit in using 0w-40 over a 10w-30?

given that it never freezes where I am. (what I mean is, cold starting not really a problem, so what benefit does the 40 weight at operating temps give me over a 30 weight.)

I ran one fill of Syntec 5W50 in my 9-5 two summers ago. I'll say this-it's about the only oil I've run in that car that felt thick as molasses after an hour interstate commute.

Don't know exactly what that means....but.....

Castrol Syntec 5w-50 in a 13 hp Chinese-built generator engine. That's what the manual calls for.

Thanks Overkill but I think I would rather drive to Canada and get it myself it would give me an excuse to vistit my northern neigbors and have some fun!
