I stopped by our local Wally World this evening to look for bargains and saw that they had 5-quart jugs of Valvoline Synpower for $19, which works out to $3.80 a quart. It's the new jug, so it's not like they're getting rid of old stock. I already had a jug in stock, but I'll use it this weekend, so I picked up another one.
The same store has Quaker State conventional on sale for $10.50 for a 5-quart jug.
Just thought I'd share in case anyone needs to go shopping.
Incidentally, I've never sent any oil for a UOA, but I've been using Synpower in my Tacoma since the summer of 2007 and the engine seems to be very happy with it. We've had more than the average number of cold mornings this winter--three in the teens just this past week--and my truck makes no startup noise at all. The Tacoma starts quickly, but the oil pressure light is off as the first cylinder fires. That tells me that cold (well, moderately cold compared to northern temperatures) Synpower flows well. Consumption between changes is zero. I can't see much of the valve train, but what I can see is spotless--not even any varnish at 53,000 miles.
