Just bought a 2006 convertible, my 93 civic took a [censored].

not really sure what oil has been used in the car but looking through the filler cap the thing looks brand spanking new, shiny as [censored]. Oil in it now is very light amber in color... I want to use synthetic to keep it that way, are all synthetic oils pretty much on par with eachother? also the manual transmission uses 75w85 weight oil and the rear diff uses 80w90 are these available in synthetic? thanks guys.

to BITOG and congrats on your purchase. How many miles does your Z have on it? I'd recommend synthetic gear oil in that transmission and differential. Amsoil makes excellent stuff for this application in the full synthetic flavor.

Feel free to switch over to a quality synthetic as well in this engine. Stick to the manufactures recommended weight and don't over do it on long oil change intervals.

Enjoy it.

51k....

so supertech synth is a no no? lol.

i have read that this engine likes 40wt oil, it calls for 5w30 or 10w30 if outside temp isnt below 0 F.

I would use either 5w30 or 10w30. 10w-40 is acceptable but may reduce gas mileage. I have the same engine in a G35 and use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 year round.

I would stick to the 5w or 10w30.

I would use a quality synthetic oil. Look into Pennzoil Platnium or if you want to spend some money you may want to try Redline.

thats funny, i have read that rotella t-syn 5w-40 is good in the VQ35DE also, a guy with a TT setup used it and it came back really good in a UOA... I am gonna check supertech UOA's, I wonder if they make a 5w-40...

Long thread but some interesting info in it. I plan on running RTS in my VQ40DE from the next change.

Redline makes great manual transmission lube.
MTL or MT90 will give great shifting and excellent wear. So will Amsoil's new MTF.
You can run all sorts of engine oils. The RT S is very good and reasonable in price. Maybe a bit thick for all conditions.

Redline's solution to 75w85 MT oil was to mix some 75w90 GL4 with some synchromesh fluid. That is what they did for their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution package.

80w90 synthetic gear oil is not common, but 75w90 synthetic gear oil is common, and is great wherever any any XXw90 is needed.

wally world wanted $22 for a 4qt jug of Rotella T-Syn, plus $5.77 for another quart.... so I just bought a 5qt jug of valvoline synpower 5w30 at $19, still better than dyno ....don't see much on it.

Sweeeeet car by the way! I`ve read on some of the 350Z forums where they were using anything from 40 weights to Mobil 1 15W50 if they like to drive their Z`s hard. Most VG owners use 50 weights in hot climates. Not completely sure about VQ`s though. Here`s a copy and paste from Specialty Z`s page. They specialize in nothing but Z32s and Z33s:

Oil Recommendation
We highly insist on using nothing but the best for our Zs, so we choose to use synthetic oil. If you know anything about oil you know it's the best route to take. Don't forget that genuine Nissan Oil Filter too! We like to use Mobil 1 or Royal Purple oil in our personal cars. Due to the extreme heat turbo cars make, it's not a bad idea to use thicker oil (15w50).
