2026 Prius 0W-8 oil!!!!

I have been using only 0w-20 on Corolla hybrid 2015, similar to gen 3 Prius engine, but with revised piston, piston rings, and head gasket. At 120k miles without oil consumption. Partly because I do 5-7k miles interval. I bought them used at 60k miles. The previous owner always use 0w20 10k OCI using TGMO.

This is one of the original paper of the development of 0W-8 by Toyota

I think it rellies on the synergy of Mo-DTC and Borate type additive & detergent that enhanched the film thickness at the boundary lubrication condition to compensate very thin 0w8 oil.
"It was confirmed that the boric acid modified detergent promotes the formation of MoS2 reaction film on the sliding surrace under boundary lubrication and contributes to the reduction of friction"
From this paper alone, It convinced me to use 0w-8 in n newest Toyota engines, without any doubt. Especielly for the hybrid cars without turbo.

The facts that it is part of meeting CAFE demands, is just why not. Just like how we reduce antiwear and detergent in oil at around 2005 to extend the lifespan of catalytic converter.

I would like to see if the wear number on using thicker oil have a better wear. Otherwise, we are still guessing.
We all know at lower temp, the viscousity is much higher, exponentially. Toyota is very conservative and I doubt using what recommended 0w8 has negative effect.
Pennzoil Platinum 0W-16 and 0W-20 in same engine with similar driving conditions and weather conditions in real world use. Not a significant difference and the engine/oil pump survived the thicker oil just fine. Both oils are suitable for use. No recalibration required. 😉

Yeah, " magically throw a rod " while sitting in traffic & it's 105 degrees out....Oh, and the A/C is on full blast.
A few years ago, we drove our ‘21 Sienna Hybrid to Florida and back without issue. It was extremely hot and the van was fully loaded up with 6 people plus coolers and luggage. There was a major accident in the Florida panhandle which left us idling on the hot summer asphalt for hours with AC on full blast. If the engine wasn’t getting proper lubrication or the 0W-16 oil wasn’t exchanging the heat sufficiently then it would have overheated. Drove that vehicle for several years after that summer trip and the only thing that magically destroyed it was a head on collision. Hard to blame the oil for that.

Thanks @ATex7239. I agree that using 0w-16 or thinner should be fine on any newer Toyota hybrid. I do not recommend 10w-XX or worse 15w-XX in hybrid for subtropical countries. The viscousity difference at low < 32F temperature is in 1000× than at operating temp.
Cold start wear should not be ignore. 0w-8 is fine, but also 0w40. Which one is better, it depends on the applications. For Toyota or Honda engines, I am ok with 0w8. Their engine are well made and 0w8 has less viscousity improver, but needs more robust combination of detergent and antiwear. For Diesel, I won't put thinner than 0w30.

Is this true I can’t get a solid answer anywhere. My new car will be in mid September, just doing some research…. Thx in advance.

Run what is specced until it is out of warranty if you feel you need to run something other than what Toyota specs for the car . If you run something other than what they say during the warranty and something happens you are going to eat all the repair costs .
