The leftovers are probably very, very aggressively incentivized.

I can get about $5k off the 14

You got me wondering if the shift points can be reprogrammed with a laptop.

Nope, but there are tuners available.

My guy at Diablo would do an email tune for under a hundred bucks, easily resetting shift points. But I am not familiar with the Mustang V6. Most canned tunes alter the shifting program, but it's not always the way one individual would like them to be.

My FIL has a 13 V6 ragtop, it's a beautiful deep dark metallic red, a stunner to look at. But I agree with Cujet, it's a "floor it or nothing" kind of car...

1) It's absolutely gutless unless your foot is on the floor, at which point it takes an incredibly annoying 2-3 seconds to downshift 4 gears and then takes off.
2) It is programmed to upshift into a high gear at light speed. So when pulling into traffic, it's in 3rd before you complete the 90 degree, right hand turn. Leaving you no choice but to floor it, and wait. Very annoying.
3) It falls flat going up hills, and won't pull 70 up a long, gentle hill. So the speed drops off to 63, Then it downshifts 2 gears and zooms up to 80, only to repeat the cycle.

There is nothing wrong with the engine, or the transmission. They are well made. However the programming is ABSOLUTELY INTOLERABLE.

Manual shifting does not help much, as the transmission is still slow to respond.

Get the V8.

What you're describing sounds like an engine with absolutely no torque whatsoever, and it doesn't make any power at all unless its at high revs...I've driven cars like that and they are annoying as he!! to drive...

Over on the Buick Regal forums, many turbo and GS owners rave about their "Trifecta" tune. Apparently you buy their programming and a cable (not cheap) which connects your OBDII port and your laptop, and you upload the tune from the laptop to your car's computer. According to the enthusiasts, it can get your 259 hp Regal GS up into the 300 whp range.

It seems to be only for GM products right now, at least on their website: http://www.wot-tuning.com/forums/index.php?/store/

My observation exactly on a rental I had in FLA last year. After driving lighter vehicles with better outward visibility and refinement - the mustang is a Pigmobile - and I wanted to love it as I like RWD and highly tuned V6 over a V8. The stick should be better (if its not a junk box like the older T5) but that still doesn't address weight or visibility or driving position. There are Better ways for ME to automotive euphoria.

I don't know about the automatic.. but I've read that the manual V6 'stang is into the 13s.. stock.

If you're worried about her wrapping it around a tree, you might want to look at something different entirely.

Well quick update...the wife hates the seats.

Now I want one....

But we have decided to wait until the kiddie hauling days are over (24-36 months) and then get a convertible.

Sounds like the Mustang's v6 needs a turbo or blower...not to give it more HP, but to give it some low RPM grunt...I had an '87 Regal T-Type with the 3.8 turbo (it was basically a Grand National in disguise) and that thing was a beast even at lower RPMs because of the turbo...it had the torque of a big block v8!

It probably needs much better programming. Our large SUV has a smaller V-6, which makes less power and probably less torque, and doesn't drive anything like this Mustang is reported to drive. Programming is everything with an automatic transmission. It sounds like typical "old iron" type of programming, where it'd upshift at every opportunity. Our Chrysler minivan was a lot like that. It'd shift up and down multiple times on the same hill.

Cars don't have to drive like that. Thankfully, many don't anymore. Some brands as a whole are better than others.

Modern auto's are always designed to hunt for top gear to save fuel. Usually a tune will fix it, and since the aftermarket for the Mustang is massive I'm sure someone has done it.

Slow responding is annoying, but can you use "sport" mode or whatever and lock out the top gears when in town?

Fixed it for you.

Not all modern automatics operate that way. I've driven enough different ones to appreciate those that don't force the highest gear possible at all times. And those are the ones I enjoy (and ultimately choose to own).

First thing I said to myself whilst driving the 'stang rental out of the airport in Ft. Myers was, "WHY did they program the ECM/ ECAT so conservatively on the V6 car! -This is worse than any ecobox Ive driven and an obvious, glaring, unforgivable flaw!".
Doesn't anyone at ford drive their midline product?

I recall The old GTs/302V8 in the mid eighties were dogs too with a slusher and my G.F. Witch at the time got a T5 row-it-yourself because of it.

Not all the Mustang V6 automatics drive that way, my sister has a 2013 base model with Trak pack and automatic.....

Good move...the back seat is a pain for anyone over 2 ft tall. Still with the top down, it's a ball to drive in my opinion and not a "pigmobile" as one likes to call it. His opinion anyway. Lots of other pigmobiles out there beside the Mustang.

My wife wanted hers and she loves it and is happy with it......and if the wife is happy.....then everybody else is happy.

EXACTLY! They vary wildly, with the exact same gearbox behaving completely differently in different vehicles all due to programming variables...
