Any comments on the new Civic? I think it's a vast improvement over the "old" one, which I already thought was decent. The new rear styling treatment looks very classy, as does the tweaked interior.

Other than that, though, this looks promising for sure. I was sad to see the Civic go downhill in 2012. Hopefully this refresh brings it back to where it should have been.
 
A little better but it's just a refresh.
I am disappointed still.
Why do they not do like Ford with the Focus and give us the Euro Civic? Maybe then we could get a hatch version back.

Hatchbacks don't sell well in the US. Honda does extremely well appealing to the masses not the one off enthusiast.

Thankfully they offer the SI still.

I like the refresh, a friend would have bought this over her recent Acura ILX 2.0L since she thought the Civic felt/looked sooooo cheap.

Refreshes can be transformations of vehicles. The Subaru WRX is prime example from 2008-present. It gained the power, then looks, then finally handling mods making its bigger brother STI less appealing to buy.(even surpassed 0-60 time due to gearing).
 
...a lot of lighting tricks (as usual) to make the car look cool.

Should be alright though.
 
Exterior is looking much better, still not sure how I feel about the dash. I might have to look at one... IMO the Acura version looks like one I would actually drive.

For me, hatch has nothing to do with being an enthusiast. The problem is hatchbacks in this class are non existent. We have the Yaris, Versa, Fit, but they're all subcompacts. I went to Honda originally to buy a Fit but I just could not quite deal with the tiny engine and miserable MPG for its size. If Honda was offering a Civic hatch at the time I would have gotten it for sure. My friend recently bought a Focus hatch and as much as I like the car, the rear room leaves a lot to be desired, including the torture chamber rear seats.

I think if they brought back the Civic hatch (think Euro Civic) it would sell just fine.

I think it's very good for a "refresh". IMO Honda did a good job in addressing the criticisms of the 2012 civic. For those wanting more, remember this was not meant to be a completely new vehicle. It's amazing they implemented these changes in a short time frame.

As a previous honda/acura fan, I commend Honda for finally waking up. The new 2013 Accord and Civic are good signs. But they still have a long way to go if they want to be innovative company they once were.

Agreed however sales are brisk and they are turning a profit. Mazda for example is innovative and typically engaging to drive but does not pay the bills.

2013 for the mass of folks who did not like the 2012 which sold well?

We've had a Mazda3 hatch since 2004. It has garnered tons of praise and sold well for Mazda. 2012 finally offered a 2.0 in the US hatch and boosted the MPG to be competetive. Seems Ford is the only company that took note, though.

You can get leather in far worse cars than the Civic. It was available in the Saturn S-series, Neons, etc.

You can get leather in far worse cars than the Civic. It was available in the Saturn S-series, Neons, etc.


Yeah but it is laughable in all of them. The last thing a buyer of one of these econobox buyers needs is to waste an additional $1000 on leather, when they likely cant afford the car as it stands.

That said, Id consider buying a civic Si, and if it forced me to have leather, Id take it.

Vinyl is by far a superior material, and I wouldnt think twice about taking that.

I hear you but I don't agree 100%. I would have considered getting leather in my car because I like heated seats (only available in leather trim) but I had to also pay more for other stuff which I also did not want. That being said, in my case I wanted this car for its gas mileage, knowing I probably could have gotten a nicer car, but not one with really good gas mileage. Someone who buys leather in a Civic might want a car that is somewhat upscale inside, but still gets good MPG, as opposed to something like an Acura with a V6, etc.
 
considering that the only real critics have been automotive journalists, it goes to show that they had some good feedback and this is a good direction for the civic. the sales however has painted a different picture, consumers didnt give a [censored] about their opinion and bought the 2012 civic like it was cotton candy.

at least now honda can sleep well at night. well as soon as they obliterate the abomination called the crosstour and bring back the element. in my not so humble opinion.

I only buy cars with leather. Is vinyl a material better suited to my needs? Perhaps, but it's not available so it's a moot point. Cloth seats stain and cloth grabs certain types of clothing fabrics. I dislike cloth seats so much that I'll buy the leather option in every instance. Even if the leather seats ALONE cost $1,000 to buy, I'd buy them.

I traded a car about a year and a half ago, partly because I wasn't comfortable in it. I'm not about to make that mistake again.

(But we've also had these discussions on leather seats before, and all the topic ever ends with is something similar to "let's agree to disagree".)
