not long after changing from dino oil to synthethic , the 2 of us took a drive out of town to shop in our PRIZM ( Corolla )that has a 5 speed manual and over 74,000 mis.. The trip odometer was at about 129 mis. and the gas gauge little under 3/4 of a tank when we got back. So, refilled at local SUNOCO station w/ 87 octane and took little less than 3 and 1/4 gallons gas , which averaged out to 40.02 m.p.g.. I'd say the drive consisted of a bit over 1/3 city ( avg. speed of 33 )and about 2/3 highway ( avg. speed of 69 ). That never happened before w/ that type of driving ( usually about 38 m.p.g. , pre-syn ). Once before w/ the dino oil , but average speed was only in low 50,s and much warmer weather . If not due to syn-oil , still pleased .

2 MPG from different oils of the same viscosity?
I'm sure that you are using a fine oil, but.... I'm not sold on this massive increase.

The pump/pump shut off would have only have to be off by about 5% to account for that much difference in MPG. With that small amount of fuel used and only 1 data point its just not enough to make any conclusions on.

clicked the fuel nozzle 5 times , as always . Still can live w/ the total m.p.g. possbly a bit lesss w/ the price of gas being $2.90 a gal for 87 octane . It's sure to keep rising for the warmer months to come and hurricane season to blow some winds into the inflated prices .

I'm running Syn oil now and have run it in the past. I've kept track of EVERY gallon of gas that has gone through my engine for every mile.

Car is 05 Corolla with 1ZZFE motor. 74k miles and the car gets the same MPG no matter what oil I run. (I did get slightly lower using Mobil 7500 (about 1/2 mpg lower)

It has run 5w30 only and the follow brands;

Mobil Drive clean
Mobil 7500
Mobil 5000
Mobil 1
Pennzoil
QS
Castrol Syntec
Castrol Syntec Blend
Castrol GTX
Supertech Syn
Halvoline

Last 4 tanks have been over 43 mpg with the last one 44.31 mpg. This time last year I had Castrol GTX in the engine and the 4 tank average was 43.88...

You can not go with a single or even a few tanks to get accurate mpg. Its a fill with the SAME pump the SAME way for many tanks.

Take care, bill

Amsoil would have given you an increase in mpgs

And is guaranteed up to 25,000 or 35,000 miles and is the best oil in the world . well, that is what I have read.

Ok, so if I run Amsoil how MUCH MPG will I for a FACT get?

And If I don't get it, you will pay for the Amsoil and filter....

I'm getting 43-44 mpg right now using $2.50 syn form Wal-Mart. Which is the same as I get with 69 cent a quart GTX.

So, you should be able to get me a FACTUAL number of MPG I will see.

25k of oil changes will cost me $23.85 incl oil filters.

How much will AMsoil cost me? Plus a filter that will last 25k miles.

Let me know, Bill

I've always had the opisote happen to me. When I go from syn to dino, the MPG seems to go up slightly?????

Did this on our Santa Fe, my old Sentra, and old Ranger. I'm currently running syn in my Civic, but considering going to a moly rich dino.
