Old question, different engine.

1994 Silverado, 5.7L (350ci) TBI, 116K miles.

Can someone inform me if I have roller type lifters?
If I don't, should I be worried about the reduced ZDDP levels of current PCMO's?

Thanks for the reply!!!

Been a long time reader (years) first time poster.

Up till about 4 years ago it saw only QS 4x4 10w30 and 4-5k oci's. I've tried several different oils since QS 4x4 went away. It's got Max life 10w-40 in there now, but must admit the top end seems quiter with Rotella 10w30 in it.

thanks

Those 5.7's will run great on anything you put in them, practically. They're very tough motors for the most part. My friend's sister has a 5.7 in their '99 Sierra Classic that they just get changed at Wal-Mart and it runs like new. I did an oil change for them once and just used Quaker State 5w30 in it with an AAP TotalGrip oil filter. No issues at all.

In the trucks I believe 94 was the first year. The caprices and other cars I believe got them in 87

Old 305s had cam problems because of bad components.
Remember that this was during the time of high ZDDP.

Cams and related components wear, esp on pushrod flat tappet type engines.
In other words, cams were not just fine until Gov't semi-castrated oils came along.
Most of our concerns today are about engine break in, and high performance with high spring pressures and fast/large cam ramps.

mechtech2: Thanks, I understand about the spring pressures and big cams needing more zddp and perhaps moly(and other EP adds). Since the truck is in excellent condition I was just tryin to see what folks here at bitog thought based on the cam/lifters of the 5.7L. It says "SH" for quality and prefered vis. 5w30 in the manual. I believe on the next change I'm going back to Rotella 10w30(maybe 5w-40).

I wished I had an OLD can of unopened SF or SG/CC or SG/CD of any flavor, I'd be tempted to get a VOA on it to compare.

Thanks!

I was under the impression that they had roller lifters, the L03 in my 1993 has roller lifters and I would seriously assume that the 350 L05 of the same vintage has roller lifters as well.

I assume you really mean "non-roller, hydraulic" lifters. If it actually has real solid lifters, they aren't stock.
