I am considering one of these for my new 17 year old driver. Guessing would sell for $4000 with 115k miles . Recent timing belt , suspension and tires. Engine is old school 115HP VW/low tech.

Any reason to hesitate? I have access to inexpensive european side job mechanic.

Sounds like an excellent candidate for a teenager (Price/Age of vehicle). I suppose it's a good idea to have a lead on parts availability for dented fenders etc.

I would expect it to sell closer to $6000 than $4000. If you can get it for under $5,000 buy it if your independent mechanic says it's worth keeping. Make sure to have the transmission serviced since that's usually skipped by a lot of folks.

These are great vehicles. I have used them for rideshare companies with this exact powertrain. However a 2.5 L engine would also be perfectly fine since it's based on the same architecture.

I'd go for it. Reliable, plenty fast for a 17 year old.

I think it's a great choice. I had one with the 2.slow and 5 speed. Easy to learn to change the oil.

How's insurance cost on them?

Like @macarose mentioned, a clean private sale 2014 Jetta 2.0 would easily be ~$7K in my area and sell for close to that.

Great choice my daughter had a 2012 and it was a solid car and could take a hit.....don't ask how I know.
