Nah. 5w30 here. It only gets down to like -12F.

I can still take the trash out in my boxers at that temp.

See it here: Cylinder Head after using SS 0w30

I'm using it now in the Caravan because the engine seems quieter with it versus the 5w20 it calls for.

If you are referring to the Noack on the SS 0w30 it's quite good at 8.8%

Stevie what were your OCIs while going over 500k?

Esso XD-3 0W-30 since 2004. 58k since my last oil change, and roughly 100k since I began the regime (first run was interrupted by the notorious GM lower intake manifold coolant leaks!). When the oil pan was off at 45k or so, no sludge, only very minor varnishing. Put the drained oil back in (I paid a lot of attention to ensuring it was removed cleanly) and kept running it.

So no coolant leaked into your oil, at point of interruption?

Only time I ever used 0W-30 was when I scored two M1 AFE 5qt jugs for $5 each at an AutoZone clearance a few years ago. Usually it's hard to find 0W-30 at a good price, otherwise I'd probably use it more often. It seemed to do perfectly fine in the fall/winter both in my Explorer (4.0L "Cologne" pushrod V6 that calls for 5w30) and my mom's Camry (2AZ-FE that calls for 5w30 but later back-spec'd to also allow 5W-20 or 0W-20)

One curiosity that has been mentioned previously: The 0W-30 has a slightly lower viscosity index than M1 5w30.

Operative phrase:

I simply can't justify paying more than $2.50/quart (after rebate) for any oil. And when rebates are in sync with clearances such that I in effect get paid to use a product . . . .

My metric is if it is cheaper than CDN tire on sale, then it's a good deal. If it isn't, I'll just buy it at CT.

Oil choice on .ca is weak sauce. CT almost always a way better deal.

0W-30 seems like a good fit for about everything on the road in every weather, even for vehicles specifying xW-20 - yeah, I said it.

Maybe it will become a viscosity that even more oil manufacturers will make.

iirc, 0 anything must have a good base oil and you can't get there with an inferior oil like you can with a 5W.
Not saying all 5W's are inferior relative to 0W but they can be whereas with 0W you are forced to behave

The side effect is higher vm but it may not be as bad due to 0's using a better base oil.

The best time to shop oil at Walmart stores is to find a clerk in the auto department and ask when the 54' trailer unloads all the oil - then when the shelves get restocked. Usually restocking is done almost immediately, within 24 hours of getting new supplies.

That's usually on an odd shopping day like Tuesday or Wednesday near me, here in Southeast Michigan.

Been using Mobil 1 AFE 0W-30 in my Tacoma the past two changes, and got 6 more quarts ready to swap in here soon as I'm coming up on 8k miles, waiting on my UOA kit to come in to see how well it's actually doing! So far, I like the way it "feels" and effortlessly it makes starting on these frigid Montana mornings.

I wish there were more options for a 0W-30, it's definitely a unicorn grade compared to everything else so readily available!

Email and ask. I've had good luck asking for un-published specs from Mobil. For example, they told me the NOACK of M1HM 10W-30 is 7%, which is not published online.

Ive run the AFE version in my sig Honda, will be using it at the next OCI in the RX as well, going to be hitting the road a lot fully loaded to the desert SW and Sierras this spring and summer so a little more viscosity for hot long highway runs of thousands of miles loaded up should be a good thing
