What do you folks think about a new body style Toyota Tundra Double cab 4x4? I've found a good deal on one, I'm thinking of replacing my F250 with one.....

I drive one at work. 2007 short extra cab with the short bed. 4.7l V8 and its a okay truck. Got around 70k on it now.

Eats brakes and rotors. Gets up and goes when pressed. Make sure if you get a 4.7l that the belt was/IS done at 90k as the belt does break REAL close to 90/100k miles.

When that happens its not pretty with DOHC/32 valves.

Overall not a bad truck.

Take care, bill

HUGE downgrade! don't do it! I've got over 45 years of field experience in Ford trucks and I wouldn't even think about switching! A colleague of mine decided to be cute and buy a new tundra, he's very displeased, and coming from a chevy guy, that's saying something! If it ain't broke, don't buy a toyota. that's what my cousin always said.

I have an 03 tundra and my friend has an 03 F150 that I've driven often. I'd take the tundra hands down every time, and mine is a work truck vs his ext cab sport model. I'd bet the newer versions are a lot closer in "perceived" quality, but Ive never driven or ridden in either, so couldnt comment there. The newest small V8 tundra engine is a 4.6L that puts out over 300 hp, might only be found in 2010 models.

I haven't had any problems with the F250, the 460 that's in it has been a good engine. It has 245 horse and 395 torque. I'll get 136 more horse and 6 more pounds of torque with the Tundra and I'll get about 10 more MPG with it too. My wife's family made the move to Florida and we made the drive back a few months ago from Tenn in my wife's Miata and again last month in my 90 Jeep Wrangler, which wasn't as bad as some may think, both have hardtops for winter. I think a Tundra would be way more comfortable for that drive!

So, your F250 with the 460 gets 4 miles to the gallon? Is that what you're telling us?

www.fueleconomy.gov gives a combined 14 mpg rating on the Tundra 4x4 with the 5.7 engine.

Dude, either your math REALLY stinks, or you drive with your foot to the floor literally every second of every day. Or maybe you have a gas tank leak.

A 30 foot motorhome with a 460 (or the newer fuel injected V10) can do better than that.

Early 5.7 Tundras had camshaft failures, tailgates that could come apart, and other quality issues. Those shouldn't be a concern on an '09 or '10.

If your F-250 is more truck than you need, there is probably no harm in going to a half ton, but a Tundra is not going to hold up to the kind of use an F-250 will.

Comparing a 94 truck with a 07 one is maybe what is wrong in your question.

I hope the 07 is way better than the 94 or the manufacturer has a big problem to solve ASAP.

My cousin always said his f250 got almost 18 'round town. Not sure if it had the 460 or not, and he did drive like a grandma. You'll get hounded on here about MPG (driving habits, weather, maintenance) common sense stuff.

I had an '02(112k) and now an'07 Double cab 4x4(36k).
I live in the city and mostly drive like granny.
13-15 mpg.
One road trip 400 miles on one tank in TN I got 19+ cruise set @70.
Road was below grade so no wind.If you get any frontal headwind mpg will go down to 15 no matter how easy you drive.
The '07 is a great road trip truck.
Seats are the reason I got out of the sit on the floor '02.
The DC has plenty of seating room front and back.
Still have the original brakes and haven't seen any crabbing on the Tundra boards about brakes.
But be aware of the there have been some problems.
I had the front diff replaced @20k.

I live up in the mountains so I don't do a lot of driving on flat ground. I almost always tow a trailer with it but even without the trailer the F250 just likes to drink that gas.

Anyways, the truck will be gone tommorrow morning, a buddy of mine is purchasing it from me, he's tried to buy it from me for about a year now to haul his drag car, he's been using his wife's Trailblazer which is a bit underpowered for his payload. He couldn't beleive it when I called him yesterday and told him it was for sale. It's been a good truck for me, I've had it for 10 years, easy come easy go.

The 08 Tundra I'm picking up this weekend is owned by another buddy of mine that I used to work with. It will be the newest vehicle I've ever owned. It's only got 22K on it, he never pulled anything with it. He is taking over his wife's 4 door Tacoma so she can get a new 4Runner. They are Toyota loving folks. I'm looking forward to the "new truck".

Enjoy your new truck, and let us know how it works out!

What are you maintenance plans for it? (C'mon, you knew someone would ask!)

What was recalled on the second generation Tundra's? The 2000-2006 ones are starting to be recalled in the north due to frame rust.

gas pedal. my cousin said it gets stuck and the truck accelerates uncontrollably killing passengers in a fiery crash. the 07-10 tundra was included in the recall issued yesterday.

Amazing that I've driven Tundras at work with size 14 boots on my feet for YEARS and NEVER had anything stuck or uncontrolled as far as operation of the vehicle.

Guess I better make sure that the life insurance is bumped up since I'm driving a death trap....
