hey guys just got a call from my girl and when she starts the car it pudders, shakes then shuts off.. when she cranks it back up it doesnt shut off but it shakes a little. i asked her if it still shakes when she comes to a stop light and she said no.. any ideas? info on the car below

110k miles, auto
new yota plugs
new pcv valve
fuel injector cleaner done right before new plugs installed (around 100k miles)
changed the oil last week, filter is clean

any ideas?

--a few ideas that i have. dirty intake around the butterfly..or she isnt turning the key over long enough for it to catch properly (she may have been in a hurry) i know mine has done that in the past not paying attention (tacoma)

this has happened 3 times in the past 2 days. she may have cranked it to go places atleast 10 times in the past two days. so 3 out of 10 times in the past 2 days this has happened

Perhaps fuel pressure bleed down?

Try turning the ignition to on, but don't start it, and wait about 5 seconds so the fuel pump can pressurize the system.

no CEL no nothing.. no bad idling no nothing. she did fill up the day it started happening but in my past i have had [censored] gas and its a consistant matter not just at start up

ryan isnt that attached to the side of the intake or is in the intake manifold? i will take a toothbrush and clean the butterfly on both sides if i can. the outer wall and spray libereally into the tiny hole below the butterfly.. its been ahwhile since i had done that part..

I personally do not believe that such issue is tied to dirty butterfly valve, possibly IAC valve but then again: it doesn't explain the lack of shaking during idling.

Assuming that ignition module is still good, then I would go for a methodical approach in narrowing down this problem: fuel rail pressure(overnite, hot, etc.), ignition/spark problems, bad tank of gas, fuel filter clogged? car battery being weak, etc.

Q.

(yes, the car battery being weak part happened to my dad's 7th gen civic: when cold, it would stall after putting it on Reverse(A/T). Shift it back to neutral and the car would start afterwards. This does not happen when the car is warm/hot. Batttery load-tested fine (with carbon pile tester) but shown to be a bit weak) Replace the car battery with a fresh one solved it completely.)

Did you noticed the problem immediately after the new plugs, pcv, cleaner...? If not then I'd say it could be bad gas. Try fueling up with plus or better at a good gas station like shell or texaco. Use good gas so you can rule that out as a problem. Before you start tearing into the engine.

Could also try to reset the ECU, to force the computer to relearn. I usually do this when something is replaced in the engine. After oil changes too.

Hi
Check the idle screw at the base i have had two toyota's in the shop here over the last year or so with wear on the idle adjustment screw and base.. Before you "adjust" anything clean the throttle body with gummout throttle body cleaner it works wonders..
this problem will almost never turn on the check engine lamp
Hope this helps

pm sent.. i thought everything was computer controlled?... anyway so this past weekend i checked things out (not the screw though bc i just read this today--monday) and notta. i cranked it up at different times and notta.. i am leaning towards operator error BUT i would love to find this screw so i can check that out also..

I had similar symptoms.

Bad news dude..I just went to the dealer and got my fuel pump and computer replaced under warranty. There are TSBs out there for the 2005 2006 Matrix that cover each issue.

I would check for similar TSBs for the Corolla. The bummer is you are probably out of warranty.

its not a matrix and the guy at toyota told me about that and he said that when that does go bad (he think i am safe) that it just wont start period. her car is the corolla le.. dont know if it uses the same computer or not
