Just picked up a 3rd gen 4Runner. Had the valve cover gaskets replaced today and was pleasantly surprised by how clean it looks. Service records showed a diet of bulk 5w30 conventional @ 5k ish OCI. I’ll be running 5W30 M1 and Toyota filters in it.
Take a good look at the lower ball joints. They are a known failure point on 3rd gen 4runners. The factory design places excessive shear force on the ball joint, ball joint stud, and the ball joint retaining bolts. When it fails, the lower control arm will seperate from the spindle and drop to the ground. At highway speeds, it will cause major front end damage.
