    Math Class

I've noticed that you can almost guess a clerk’s age by the way she counts your change back. If she counts it "backwards" (as in "ok Mrs Smith that came to 2.57" and she hands you 3 pennies and says, "two sixty" then a nickel and says "sixty-five", then a dime and a quarter while saying...

    IRS Changes Mileage Rate

Goody. I work for the U.S. Census Bureau and get the standard 40.5 cents per mile. We were told last week that our reimbursement rate was going up, but that we'd have to pay taxes on anything over the IRS 40.5 cent rate. Now I won’t have to pay taxes on the extra few cents per mile. We...

    Emergency Fund

Except for the money, your list is pretty much standard winter readiness up here. And since this is the U.P. winter readiness is a year 'round thing I don't have a generator, but the neighbor does. So if I needed to run the well pump for a bit to refill the water jugs, I'd borrow his. If the...

    Who should I donate to?

Good idea. One of the local radio stations here is teaming up with the local YMCA for a big auction next week. I'm sure the other local sations are doing something similar, but I'm not going to listen to top 40 or country to find out Check out the websites of your local radio stations, the...

If your tank isn't full - go fill it now while it's cheap

Well, I lost $2 today by not gassing up at $2.74 in the morning when I took the kid to school. It was up to $2.89 when I picked him up. On the bright side, I save $1.30 by filling the tank then and not after I did some afterschool shopping. It was up to $2.99 an hour later.

Gas price when you first drove

Giving away my age here. When I first started driving, at the ripe old age of 21, gas "down home" (southern Michigan) was 29.9. "Up North" where I went to college it was 39.9 Oddly enough, some (mumble, mumble) years later, the price difference between the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula...

    How Long Will You Live?

96 I get 4 extra years just for being female. 'Bout time those 2 X chromosomes were good for something. I did the test for my dad. Dad came up with 106. He'll be 92 in August. Oh wow! I just ran the test for Mom, who is 'only' 76 and as soon as I put in "female" her life expectancy shot up...

    Were having a Baby!

Congrats and best wishes! Twins!?! When I was expecting my second child, and folks would say "What do you want a boy or a girl? Oh I know, just so long as it's healthy" My reply was "just so long as there is just ONE!" On the other hand, my great grandmother, who had two sets of twins, always...

Thank You to Pizza Drivers and other working Americans

I wasn't responding to the point of the post, I was simply letting Bugshu know why ....waitress could deliver food a few feet and get 15% - 20% tips .... It's because that 15 to 20% is a part of their wage. It's not something extra that waitresses get that pizza delivery people don't get. And...

Thank You to Pizza Drivers and other working Americans

The pizza owner paid us minimum wage plus $1 per delivery and minimum wage. The $1 barely paid for gas and that was years ago. Maintenence and vehicle costs were on me. Sometimes it amazed me that a waitress could deliver food a few feet and get 15% - 20% tips and I could drive 30 miles in my...

Thank You to Pizza Drivers and other working Americans

In the early to mid '70s, the minimum wage was around $1.65/hr ...... for people who didn't get tips. I don't remember what my cash wages were as a waitress at that time, but I know it was nowhere near the $1.65 that busboys made. I'll bet those waitresses who didn't share the tips were making...

analogies and metaphors found in high school essays

I just got this in an e-mail, so who knows where it came from or how genuine it is, but they are (mostly) funny and I thought I'd share it with you. This is for those of you with high-school aged kids, or near that age. These came from the annual "Dark and Stormy Night" competition. They are...

    Wife 1.0 (for win98, winME, win2000 & winXP)

INSTALLING HUSBAND 1.0 Dear Tech Support, Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance - particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0...

Here's what I found at FTC Consumer Alert Q&A: The National Do Not Call Registry Will All Telemarketing Calls Stop If I Register? 29. If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls? No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call...
