    New “safer” coolant at WM?

Seems like Peak 10X but made with PG vs. EG, like the old Sierra and Prestone Low-Tox coolants. I like the idea of a “safer” coolant, buses here are running glycerin-based coolant. Sierra and Low-Tox was pricey, and you can’t use a EG hydrometer to check freeze point.

Euro xxW-30/0W-20 or ILSAC 5W-30 in TGDI Subaru?

Car in question: 2019 Subaru Ascent, FA24F, about 30K on it. I’ve been running M1 ESP 0W-30 for the last oil change on it. Car is used primarily for road trips. Saw that Walmart carries M1 ESP 0W-20 X2 now so it’s a paralysis by analysis debate now. This engine is hard on oil - long timing...

    Inexpensive, fairly good DMMs?

I don’t need a Fluke, but don’t want absolute garbage. I misplaced my trusty Craftsman DMM and the AmazonBasics one I bought to replace it was dead barely a year after I bought it. What’s a good, inexpensive DMM? I’ll be using it for basic diagnostics - voltage, resistance and continuity. Duty...

Manually moving steering knuckle by hand = damage?

when I was moving the steering knuckles by hand to position the rack gear to remove a tie rod, I noticed power steering fluid gushed out of the pump. Did I blow a seal or damage the rack? The steering was a bit notchy after I got the truck back on the ground. I’m sure this truck just needs an...

Easiest way to attack upper shock nuts?

I need to take off the upper shock bolts on a Ranger: Called the local AZ, they don’t have the tool that would hold the stud so the nut can be loosened. Amazon has nothing for overnight delivery. What else can I do?

    Before I install it, here’s a STP S11934XL.

I never buy filters from AZ/OR unless I have to, but I need to work on a friend’s car. Brakes, LOF. I also had $20 in AZ Rewards to use up. Decided to grab a filter for one less stop and a jug of oil. This will be going onto a Genesis G80 3.8L V6, I believe HyunKia sources filters from Mahle...

Shock recommendation for a lightly-driven truck?

Truck in question: 1998 Ford Ranger, 3.0L V6 extended cab, 2WD so no torsion bars. I’m working on getting parts for the front end rebuild. I’m having a hard time deciding on shocks. On Rock, I have Motorcraft, KYB, Monroe, Gabriel and the Chinesium brands, PRT who supposedly supplies...

Flushing out car oil in a motorcycle?

I was at the local AZ a few nights ago getting car wash soap(I know but I wasn’t waiting for Amazon or felt like going on a Costco run) and someone grabbed two bottles of Valvoline motorcycle oil and Gunk Engine Flush after telling the counter man he filled his Yamaha bike with “car” oil. I told...

    Out of round drum check?

How can I easily check for an out of round drum or brake shoes? I’m trying to isolate either bad shoes or a bad drum on a 2007 Honda Fit. Part of me wants to get some chalk and see the outlines on friction and drum. I’m trying to salvage the drum, new Honda ones are $122 each - I’ve heard not...

Fram Endurance or OE Toyota for HPL?

I’m gonna run HPL on the Prius and maybe extend my OCI to 7-10K. Should I run a Fram Endurance FE4967, or will the OE Toyota Denso filter be fine for that run?

    Ultrasonic cleaner baskets?

I’ve been given an L&R ultrasonic, it needs a basket. The OE piece is $150. Can I get away with an el cheapo Chinesium Amazon one, or even a plastic basket from the dollar store?

    Valvoline “hybrid” ATF sighted.

At the local Walmart. Pricing is $1 more than regular MaxLife. If it’s still around in a few months, I’ll be using this in a Lexus RX that sees heavy rideshare use and my Prius. The 2nd gen Prius, which is the first generation of THS-II doesn’t have fluid contacting the electric motors but there...

Temp gauge dip and weak heat due to trapped air?

On the Ranger, I did the final cooling system flush, filled up with Prestone and replaced the thermostat. Now, there is heat but not as “strong” as before. Truck warms up fine. When I run the engine with the heat on, I do see the temp gauge dip from the middle down to the lower end of the...

    Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus t-stat gasket and 2-EHA?

Got this in, the construction is plastic and silicone - like the GM IMGs that get attacked by Dex-Cool. Will this seal up and standup to 2-EHA found in Dex-Cool/Clone and Prestone or should I go old-school paper and High Tack?

    Under the valve cover - ‘98 Ford Ranger, Vulcan 3.0L V6, 250K

(Mods, feel free to move this to Maintenance if this is the wrong forum) I’m doing some work for a friend in the “chosen” family, Ford dealer couldn’t figure out the misfire. It also has leaky valve covers. I didn’t take a pic of the driver’s side. This truck saw a 50 mile daily commute in...

Tire recommendation for 1998 Ranger 2WD?

The truck I’m working on needs new tires, I recommended to the owner to address it ASAP when I’m done. It’s an “extinct” size, 225/70R14. The owner has Big O close by and can drive to America’s Tire. I’ve recommended the General Altimax RT45. Any other good options not Chinesium in this size...

    Ford coil connector tool?

What tool would I use to release the terminals from a Ford DIS coil pack? I bought a Motorcraft WPT207 pigtail, complete with butt splices and Sumitube heat shrink, but I see a red lock on the mating side and it looks like I can de-pin the old connector and insert the bare terminals into the new...

G-05 or old school green for a Ford Vulcan V6?

I topped it off with Prestone Cor-Guard since it was low on coolant but I’m torn between G-05 or old school green(I’ll use the “better” Zerex formulation if so). Truck seems to be filled with Motorcraft green - it was dealer serviced but it will see a quick lube for future services. Should I...

Misfiring Ranger with the 3.0L Vulcan - diagnosis steps?

A friend had someone in the family with a late 1990s Ranger with the Vulcan 3.0L V6. Owner states random misfire. Shop sounded like they went parts cannon with it, it got new plugs, wires and coil assembly. I know the cam synchronizer is a sore point in these. He wants me to diagnose it, the...

Fram EG Toyota cartridges - now Champ made.

The Fram EG/TG cartridges for Toyotas were made in China or Korea. Now, at least the EG ones are now Champ-sourced and made in the US. Essentially the same as a MP9972/10158 and a Champ/Service Champ filter. My local WM didn’t have the tall Tundra/Sequoia/LX570 cartridge nor did they have any...
