    VW TDI Spec Oil 505.01

To the OP...for what it's worth I had an experience with a local BMW dealer which unsettled me a bit.Went in for an oil top off (covered under the warranty)...they were cool about it..."I'll be back in a minute",said the tech.He comes back with a bootle of Castrol which was *not* LL-04 (BMW's...

    Expration Date,Fuchs?

A few years ago I bought some Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP for my previous "d".On the bottles was an expiration date which,IIRC,was about four years after I bought them.Do high quality synthetic oils like Mobil 1 and Fuchs actually have a limited "shelf life"? I ask because I've got about 12 litres of...

should my next car be a diesel?

I'm on my second diesel and will never go back.To quickly address several of your points 1)Cold starting--> My BMW 335d,on a visit to central Quebec last winter, started like a champ after having sat all night in -31F weather. 2)Finding fuel--> That's only an issue when you're in unfamiliar...

should my next car be a diesel?

I'm on my second diesel and I'm a true believer...I'll never drive anything else again."Relentless" power...."relentless" is how Jeremy Clarkson described the engine that my BMW featured...and highway fuel economy that approaches 40 mpg.Initial cost is a minus but,IMO,*everything* else is a plus.

Rant - Please do not hoard motor oil.

Sorry...I can't go along with the OP.My current ride is a German diesel that requires an oil that's fairly tough to find here in the US.This is also true of my previous ride.Relative scarcity and outrageous prices (one OC requires 8.5 quarts @7.50/quart) compels me to stock up when I see it at...

WM Canada everyday price PZYB 4.73L Jug $10.88

Tommorrow I'll be visting Pep Boys and paying $7.50/litre (with a 10% off coupon) for 8 litres (one oil change) of Mobil 1 European Formula.Somehow the dream of $2.25/litre oil is long gone for me!

    does AC affect battery life?

In my neck of the woods we use our A/C no more than six months a year (if that).I've always gotten at least 4-5 years out of my batteries but that certainly doesn't mean I couldn't have gotten more by not using the A/C.I think 4+ years from a battery is reasonable.

    Going without health insurance

Health insurance, like all other types of insurance,is a roll of the dice.If you remain healthy during a particular period any insurance premiums you've paid are down the toilet. If you have a major car accident or a heart attack then your premiums are probably well spent. If you have anything to...
