They use the same "100 knot duct tape" the crew chief used to stop leaks in the roofs of Hueys when the bad guys got lucky with their AK's. Ours was green. The "exit" hole was usually bigger than the "entry hole" in the floor. It's why the grunts often sat on their helmets.

I think pop rivets are employed when sheet metal is damaged.

It's been done for ages and not just in NASCAR. I have done it for several decades.
