The real question should be what the pistons and valves look like.
you wont see the pistons for a few years. there are no valve springs, they use a pneumatic valve return system. iirc the Cosworth V8s both went out on the 1st lap due to accident damage. the rev limited V10s both finished.
You are correct, they did exit early from the two teammates getting together in the turn.
However, I believe Schumacher's Ferrari V8 was also turned up to 20,000 rpm for the race since it also was a one race engine, not 2 per standard procedure. He needed every bit he could get, but still came up short.
