I am an electrical contractor and I am tired of paying $12-14 per gallon for Ridgid Dark cutting oil. Can motor oil be used with satisfactory results? I can buy SAE 30 for around $4 per gallon. Does anyone have any experience using motor oil for threading?

I have been lurking on this site for months and all I can say is ....WOW!!! This place is loaded with great info!!!

Thanks in advance,

Ty

any large major oil distributor should have a sulfur pipe thread oil you can use. Ridgid is way to high. We make one in pails and drums drums are $4.00 gallon or so pails are about $7.00 gallonm so look around and by a 5 gallon pail from your closest major distributor like Citgo, Chevron or mobil they all have one.
motor oil no matter what kind WILL not have enough anti weild additives and will cause pulled threads and short chaser life.

would be better than Motor oil but still is light on additives for cutting but I would give it a try in a pinch, go for it.

Thanks for all the replies. I found (Thanks Bruce) a dark cutting oil at our local distributor for about $7.00 per gallon. Thanksfor the info.

The brand name is Buckley Cutting oil 130. It looks and smells just like Ridgid Dark. Thanks again Bruce on the tip where to find it.
