Valuable lesson learned..

The newer corollas had optional 17" wheels with 215/45-17 and fit fine. Their normal size tires are the same 195/65-15 as your generation. I assume it's he wheels width and offset forcing your rubbing. I would either check craigslist for a set of factory alloy wheels from another Corolla, or search craigslist for fender roll as there are plenty of guys that buy the tool and make money by rolling fenders.

To give everyone an idea about the problem:

Tire Rack lists a 2017 Toyota Corolla as having 225/45R17's, where they list a 2007 as needing a 205/50R17.

Lesson? Just because it says Corolla doesn't mean it's the same from year to year.

Yes, there an entire generation between those two model years. 2009 began a new one and current gen started in 2014. Stick to the same gen and one should be fine.
