Well people keep stealing them, so they're going somewhere
Is cat theft still big somewhere in the US? They sure aren't being stolen much here despite the large number of crack heads and ample scrap yards. The yards here just won't touch cats without docs, I've sold them before. Too much documentation = too much trouble for thieves.
It used to be a LOT easier to sell used cats at any scrap yard, but I haven't really heard of people stealing them for almost a decade now. Maybe in border states people steal them and send them south.
According to a Cop friend, Catalytic Converter theft is a problem in SLC, UT. According to him, it's not so much that they are taken to the metal recyclers, but it's the shady used car lots that cater to a growing illegal alien population, (since the State Legislators are often business owners that want cheap labor, they cater to them) that are driving the demand. These car lots get junkers that won't pass emissions, then send their thieves out to steal the Cats off of mostly Toyota SUV's and Trucks, usually in the middle of the day, then they weld these stolen Cats onto their junkers.
