What would you do? Fireworks and hearing loss

I'd go see a specialist pronto. However, from what you describe, I would guess you have suffered to some degree permanant hearing loss.

I would have written the very same thing.

24/7 I have this noise
sometimes louder than others, but it's always there.

The cause of my tinitus was a mould blowing apart when I worked at a tire plant.

Pete Townsend of the rock group The Who has suffered hearing loss under the same circumstances that you have.
You might want to google: Pete Townsend hearing loss.

That's exactly what I was thinking...

The guy that did this wasn't his friend. Reading comprehension problems among many here.

Pain is how your body tells you, "you have a problem". And you have a problem. The constant ringing and "underwater" sound are just more symptoms.

You need medical attention. You could start with a General Practitioner and I would expect him/her to refer you to a specialist. You need to go see a specialist.

Beyond that, "What would I do?". I'd go see a lawyer (and I know how they're revered around here). Frankly, the guy caused you damage. At a minimum you're going to have medical bills and have to deal with pain and discomfort. At a maximum, the bills and a lifetime of impaired hearing.

Get yourself medical attention.

Great post. I could not agree more with it. See an ear doctor and call a personal injury attorney.

Research this before leaving evidence of this incident.

Don't think I'd worry about that. Almost everyone has a few wobbles in their medical history.

The relevant question is - "can you meet the medical requirements for the position?" Not - "do you have a history of things that might have had an influence on you capacity to meet the medical requirements for the position?"

In most places the occupational physician reports to the emplyer on whether a person meets the requirements for the position offered, and if they don't, what accommodations would be required. The way the report is structured will vary by jurisdiction. An occupational physician would never report, "meets current job requirements, but there was this episode back in '15 which might have ..... ".

And getting that ear properly attended to is way smarter than trying to keep your history under wraps.

I wasn't advocating to not see a doctor. But simply research and plan what doctor to see and where depending on insurance coverage.

As for employers... It's a buyers' market in the US and employers can get away with a lot of restrictions. I just don't want the OP to get screwed in the future.

Noise induced hearing loss affects hundreds of thousands of veterans. The medical profession knows a lot about it, but I'm not sure how much of it they can fix.

Get a lawyer and sue this Stephan clown for damages. I would be royally peeved if I had permanent hearing loss caused by the actions of an idiot.

We have Care Now clinics here that charge you only $30 self pay if you have no insurance. Go to a walk in clinic like that and get your ears checked ASAP. Do not put it off. When they check your ears if the drum isn't broken you should be fine in a couple days or so. But like I said DO NOT put off getting your ears checked.

Man I LOVE The Who!! They were in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the loudest rock concert ever!!

Yes, your senses are very important. This is the main. Even if tou are carefree about it now; think to the future and consider how you might feel not only having one operable ear, but the regrets and what-ifs.

What kind of firework can do this kind of damage? An over the counter M-80 coupled with reverberation from being inside? A blast from the past cherry bomb? Or???

The main culprit is probably the small enclosed area. The blast would be close to his ear and the sound waves would echo and amplify the effect on the ears.

As others have mentioned... idiots do stupid things all the time.

IMO you were physically assaulted. Secure a personal injury lawyer and possibly file a police report. Concerns of who pays what typically fall away at that point.

The firecracker no matter how small went off in a smaller enclosed space (restroom) which no doubt amplified and echoed inside your head. Do NOT protect the fool that damaged you.
