A cytokine storm is an an extreme reaction of one's immune system that causes massive damage to the cells that are being defended. Especially the vascular system suffers, with blood vessels becoming permeable. That's why, for example, with Ebola, people start bleeding internally and even externally. The immune reaction causes cell death at a massive scale, which causes septic shock. It is suspected that the Spanish Flu caused such an extreme reaction in those with very strong immune sytems that the immune system proofed lethal. With bird flu and SARS it's very similar in recent times.
