I've been thinking some about this thread lately. Unfortunately, I was unable to save the engine. The chain that drives the balancer shafts snapped, resulting in a cracked block.

I'm preparing to replace the engine and will probably take pictures of the original engine to show if it cleaned up any. I'm sure that someone here will be interested in pictures.

It was very interesting to read this well planned project!
I am kn the middle of the cleaning process, but I do it very-very slowly avoiding blockage of the pick-up tube strainer.
My proposal: SHELL Helix Ultra 5W40, Mobil 1 New Life 0W40 or similar good cleaning property oils with short OCI and OEM oil filter with built in bypass valve.

Schaeffer Nutra is reputed to be an excellent cleaner of sludge. Never tried it myself. Anyone have success with this product?
