Absolutely not. CPU power is incredibly cheap. I suspect it's just mediocre software programming.

My S4's TCM has had at least 2 software updates in the last year or two. One fixes "clunking" or "lurching" when downshifting into first.

That is a very nice color.
 
My dad had an A3, DSG was great in it. His current Porsche (not DSG) starts off in second by default if not in S mode. If you push the pedal to the floor it will drop to first.

One thing that I have to adapt to in newer German cars is that throttle response is typically very slow off the line unless you are in sport mode. In regular 'D' you have to push the pedal way down to get moving. Put it in 'S' and they react normally.
