Got a Marlin 795 for $139 at ***** Sporting Goods. Great gun I've shot over 2000 rounds through it and only had a few hiccups probably due to cheap ammo. Ruger 10/22 was over $200 that's why I picked the Marlin but if I had the cash I would get the 10/22 it's a solid firearm.

adolan21,

Both brands are solid rifle that'll last long than you will over time! Now a days even 22 ammo is getting expensive as much well as cnter fire ammo which cost well over twice what it use to be. For economy sake the difference between brands of rifles is the same. it's just old school compared to the modern version. Just enjoy your rifle and have a good time. To ring out which shoots the best it'll take you all year long easy.

Haha I actually have a smooth bore single shot Savage .22 I use for frogs. Guess you could call it a .22 guage..

I have a 10/22 and a Marlin 60. I like both, but I prefer a tube fed gun myself.

Guage is the number of lead balls that fill a pound...i.e. 12ga is the diameter of a lead ball 12 to the pound.

I tried those 22LR shotshells. They would not penetrate soft leather at short range, but they would penetrate normal fax paper at short range.

Not very powerful at all.
