Reading through my manual it states the fallowing specs for the RDA and PTU:

"Rear Drive Assembly (RDA): MOPAR Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 80W-90 API GL
5 or equivalent
non-synthetic product.

Power Transfer Unit (PTU): MOPAR Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 80W-90 API
GL 5 or equivalent
non-synthetic product."

Why do they not like to have a synthetic fluid in these units? I would like to change both at the 10k mark. Thanks for the help.

bg ultraguard would be great in either application. it is a synthetic 75w90, but works great in everything we put it in. use it with confidence in any gear oil application that calls for a GL-5.

A few of the aftermarket gear manufacturers tested gear oils. Their test showed that synthetic oils don't transfer heat away from the gears like Dino does.

Doesn't make any sense to me either

That is what I was thinking also. I guess I will just use dino to be on the 'safe' side. I email Jeep and didn't get an answer as to why I could not use a synthetic.

Visit some Jeep Patriot forums and see what they are using. I checked one real quick and lots of them using Amsoil and RP in their Patriots.
