I've got a S&W Sigma 9mm, paid $350, with four 17 round mags. Cheap simple pistol, never had a problem with it after shooting 4000+ rounds.

+1, I've had a .40 Sigma for 11 years. Great handgun. I paid $400 for mine back in the bad ol days with 2 10 round mags. It's my glovebox gun.

9mm is probably the most popular due to cost, but if you are worried about future supply, i would be considering a .38 or .357 for a revolver. but for lots of plinking, bulk .22 or 9mm is the most economical. depends on if you are just plinking or carrying, or both.

I agree, 4" Smith in 38Spl or 357M, perfect for just about anything.. Can be found used just about anywhere too for less than $400. Ammo cheap as well, even cheaper if you reload!!
