Its called over-engineering and tight tolerances.

The MaxLife Dex/Merc (full syn) I just put in my expedition had a really strong sulphur smell to it. I'm not too worried about it though......good ole American iron!
 
Reason #982 why i like standard manual shift transmissions. If there is an electrical problem with my shifting i must have forgotten to make coffee that day.

Maybe, but some manual transmissions would have extra gadgetry, such as the "Computer Activated" transmission in the early C4 Corvette, and the "Skip Shift" device found in LT1 and LS1 Camaros and Firebirds.
