Handguns have been registered here since the 1930s, and concealed/open carry is not permitted except under extremely tight and rare circumstances. Do note that the major Order-in-Council list prohibiting and restricting various firearms in the final stages of Kim Campbell's government was lifted word for word from the California list of the time.
Many of the rules relating to guns were and have been under hunting regulations, which is a completely different matter. Magazine restrictions with respect to hunting regulations have usually been stricter than those under the Criminal Code.
