The Russians had been protesting U2 overflights for years. When they finally got the capability to engage one, they did.

And had they been able to shoot down our SR-71, they would have done so. We violated their airspace for decades. We knew the risks, we flew those planes where we wanted, when we wanted.

By the way, didn't Gary Powers take off from Turkey that day?

Edit: he took off from Pakistan. But Turkey was part of the operation...

But Russia has got to be upset about their passenger jet being bombed by ISIS.

Its a mess over there.
Russia has their interests and wouldn't have to clean up the mess the U.S made of the middle east.

What would US or western countries do if it happens to US/Germany/UK/France etc?

Here's the flight path of Russian jet. They obviously violated Turkish airspace, and it's not the first time.

Türkiye: Turkey
Suriye: Syria

Also, for those claiming that Russian jets were bombing ISIS, there are only Turkmens (Turkish Syrians) in that region.

This was inevitable.. Putin pushed the US and we backed down. He has been pushing everyone in the area ever since he moved into Syria. Turkey doesn't like to be pushed. They have the most powerful military in the middle east. Now Putin knows where the line is. He doesn't have the people or equipment to do more then stir the pot.

As far as a new world war, we are in a world war now. It's a different kind of war, but it's still a war. We have been since 1973. Read your history.

Gary Powers was not the first to be shot down by Russia, he was just the most public one. Several US airmen gave their lives during the cold war. Most of the time their families were told the plane was lost during a training accident or due to weather.

Dad used to fly on P2V's on such missions.

Russian jet was warned 10 times in 5 minutes.

The real number is at least 120. There's a monument down at Langley for them, a EC 130. Now the logic of "cooperating" with the Russians in the bombing of ISIS in Syria ( we are told) but backing the Turks when they shoot down a Russian bomber on a combat mission against the same sort of rebels we are fighting is well beyond MY comprehension. ISIS must be laughing their whatevers off over this hypocrisy. Look, do we want to BEAT ISIS, or do we want to to allow our allies to shoot at aircraft engaged in the same mission we are? Can't the Turks, a part of NATO, HELP with this, rather than hindering it?

Bombing the Kurds? You sir, should really get educated.

Turks are bombing PKK, which is a terror organization recognized by the United States and European Union countries.

What does PKK do?

They have been killing unarmed Turkish soldiers in front of their families.

This pic was taken in Southeastern Turkey.

The Russian aircraft was no threat to Turkey. Are we going to use our brains or treat this like a video game? We and the Russians have a common interest in the Mid East, something which requires some critical thought to understand.

I like how people use the "critical thinking" card. They were warned....10 times. They got what they deserved.

So, if I walk into your house. Without your permission. And I am armed. (This was an armed fighter aircraft).

And you warn me to get out. Ten times

And then I walk in again.

And again.

I'm no threat to you? You have no right to self defense?

We do need to use our brains on this and recognize the sovereignty of a nation's airspace. We need to educate ourselves on international law before we speak. We need to use critical thinking in that context of actually understanding what we are discussing and then, perhaps, we won't so blithely disregard a clear violation of international law or rights.

Turkmens is Turkish Syrians living in that region.

Not all Turkmens are al qaeda, or whatever.

There's no difference between saying "All Arabs are terrorists" and "Turkmens are al qaeda".

Are there Turkmens, supporting terror groups? Yes.

Are there Kurds, supporting ISIS? Yes.

You should get your facts straight.

Also, if they really support al qaeda, or the other terrorist organizations, why does US support them?
