Ring job on a kohler engine

@SmokeyBear what weight oil are you running? Like others have suggested maybe try a heavier oil. I had an old JD JS36 push mower that burned 5w30. When I switched it to 10w30 HM it all but stopped burning oil. Before considering a rebuild could you try a different weight oil?

Yes, definitely try a heavier oil. A 15W40 Diesel oil or 20W50. Some would say 15W50 Mobil 1. I wouldn’t use that if it’s burning a good bit of oil. That stuff is too expensive to be fogging the neighborhood.

If you do rebuild it at that age, please do yourself a favor and replace the exhaust valve with a stellite version. It can handle the ethanol gas.

He's gotten 21 years out of it, it's not an issue with the exhaust valve..

Agreed. I think some posters were thinking this was an old K series or Magnum, when in fact it's an OHV command.

A really dirty air filter and/or engine vent can cause oil control problems…
