I have a 2005 GMC Envoy 2WD with a 5.3L V8. I'm getting ready to change the rear differential lube.
Question: What is the oil capacity of the differential?

I just did my 2005 trailblazer with the 4.2L and the rear took two quarts. The 5.3L might take a bit more (bigger ring gear). The case is the same through out the ratios but you have one of three rears. Check the RPO codes on the clove box door:
GU6= 3.42 gear ratio
GT4= 3.73
GT5= 4.10
G80 means you have the positraction/limited slip rear.

Either way, fill it until it dribbles out the fill hole. The diff cover gasket is a reusable rubber/metal gasket. Use 75w-90 oil. I used M1.

Just checked my 2005's owners manual. It specs 4.3pts for the 5.3L. Just over 2qts.

There is normally a spec in the owner's manual or on the diff itself that says to fill it to a certain level. On some it is until it starts coming out on others it is a certain distance from the fill hole. On my 2001 Suburban it is 5/8" to 1 5/8" from the fill hole so filling to the fill hole would be too much.

I found the spec you speak of. On the Envoy it says to fill it to the drain hole to 5/8" below.

Thanks for your input.
