Post your latest differential oil/transfer case change

2018 Mazda CX-9- 60,971 miles.

Decided to do transfer case, differential, and transmission as it is due and we have some big trips coming up. To my surprise the transfer case fluid and differential fluid which call for 75W85 looked really good just an Amber color, no gray or anything unusual. Only oddity I thought was plug size: differential fill plug is 23 mm, drain plug is 24 mm and both on transfer case are 24 mm.

Both the rear differential and the transfer case got Royal Purple 75W90 with 2oz LG gear mixed in bottle. Common to use RP on these Mazdas as the spec calls for a GL4 requirement.

2001 Chevy S10 Blazer 4x4 with 104,000 miles. Just did the transfer case, front and rear diff fluid change. Next on the list is the power steering fluid and the transmission filter and fluid change.

Out: Unknown transfercase oil and gear oils with unknown mileage. They were black. There was no metal on the bottom of the drain pan I used, so I guess it’s all good.

In: Valvoline Maxlife ATF red bofor the NV233 transfer case // Supertech 80w90 conventional gear oil for front and rear diff.

I bought a gallon of this conventional supertech gear oil, and it was very cheap compared to other options, I think I got it for $8. It was more than enough to do the front and rear diff.

I'm not sure what surprised me more, how big of a hex was needed for the rear diff drain plug or that my dad didn't have one 😆

Time to order a 14mm hex socket. Probably just handle it in my driveway rather than on his lift since I can slide right under the backend of the truck. It'll get HPL Diff Life 75w90 as well.

1999 Silverado 2500 (newer body style) at 129000 miles.
Rear differential Out: No idea, it looked okay-ish. It was in there since at least 2007. 16 years? It only gets 1-3k miles per year.
In: Vavoline 75w90.

2010 GX 460 at 62500 miles:
Front differential Out: I dont know, probably original 13 year old fluids.
Rear differential Out: I dont know, probably original 13 year old fluids.
Transfer case fluid Out: I dont know, probably original 13 year old fluids.

In: A mix of Vavoline 75w90 and M1 75w90 into all 3 units. Am I going to trigger someone with not using straight 75 in the transfer case? 1000 miles later and its ok so far. :)

Had a tiny weep in the drain plug. Cleaned and chased the threads and cleaned the mating surface. Found old Teflon tape.

The magnetic drain plug still has a fair amount of black goo.

2016 Ram 3500 w/AAM 11.5 ring and pinion.. 410. 143k miles.

on return from a RV trip to Alaska **** thing was making noises... I'm thinking it wore alot on the back side of the gears just because of all the steep descents with exhaust brake. it was fairly quiet under load but it was starting to chatter a bit when it unloaded ( coast) and then it would whine on decel...

so I took the rear cover off for inspection.. gears look fine. lotta fine metal particulates in the bottom of the diff... flushed the diff housing out with soap and water until it was completely clean. Then I took the bearing caps loose and basically reset the backlash by hand... filled her up with whatever gear lube I have laying around and whaddya know, it quieted down considerably.
