Onions back at Costco for hot dogs

I really don't get this whole Costco thing. Never been in one, have been to Sam's. What is so darn great about this store, and it's food court? Churros this, cookie that, pizza and hot dogs. Why is this a thing, and how is it always in the news?

It's cheap, (more or less) consistent, and they're everywhere. $1.50 for a 1/4 lb hot dog with a soda with refills. The price hasn't gone up in decades although no more Polish dog and they're not brand name meat suppliers (Costco apparently has their own manufacturing now).

As for the food court, there are some places where one can get in without a membership, although there was some talk that they would enforce membership (or at least Costco Cash card) requirements. Some people slip in or claim they're going to buy a membership, while some Costco food courts are outdoors where there's no membership check. Purchases for the food court don't come with membership checks.

I did recent send someone to San Francisco Airport and on the way home we thought maybe Costco for hot dogs. There's this Costco Business Center (a lot of restaurant supplies and resale items like candy and chips) that had a food court but when we got there it was shut down and any signs for food are gone. The seating is gone. The rest of the place is still running.
