Over the years I read:
The Dakotas of today were once slated to be one state.
Texas was once mapped out as five states.
California was three.
Those plans would've totaled 55 once Alaska and Hawaii were admitted.
Adding "Superior" equals 56.
7 X 8 = 56.

CT extended once into Eastern Ohio. It was the "Western Reserve" of CT; That name still is referenced today. (but not in CT)
