On the farm they have been using Mil 5606 Sea Star/Bay Star Steering fluid in small pumps that raise and lower doors/gates on a grain trailer. The pumps will not take a standard hydraulic oil because it's to heavy. Is Dexron 3 just as thin as the more pricer mil rated oil and are there any foreseen problems in using dexron? Thanks

5606 is normally a 15 cSt fluid. less than half of the Dexron spec. You will have very sluggish action in cold weather and possibly broken hoses or seals.

Even better is the modern suspension fluids used by many brands. also used in the electric/hydraulic power steering of Chrysler products. With a 15 cSt (+/-) viscosity and a 300+ VI, the viscosity curve is almost flat. Often referred to as Pentosin® CHF 11S o CHF 202

With this in Audi, BMW, MB, Chrysler, Ford, GM, etc. it should be easy to find, although not necessarily cheap.

For future reference, the DexIII is a mineral oil ATF with a viscosity of about 7.5 cSt so it is thicker than the 5606.

The 5606 has a viscosity of 5.1 cSt. This 5606 fluid was developed for equipment in which the operation was to be in low temp situations.

If you can't get the 5606, a DexronVI would be better.
