When the specific caliper retraction tool doesn't work to spin the piston back into the caliper.

Needlenose in the holes turned by a channel lock pliers 🤣

And yes this car has been neglected.
 
I've done that job twice on my '06 9-3. If you rent the brake took kit from AZ it includes the piece with the proper pegs. Makes the job very easy. When you finish be sure to engage the hand brake lever a few times to test the parking brake. BTW I used to live in Chiraq too, on the north side. Winters there can corrode any substance on the planet.

Congrats on keeping one of these unique vehicles running.
 
Sometimes you gotta too what you gotta do with the tools you have. I used the pliers many times for the rear caliper pistons. It’s a pain but works.

Here is a step up from the pliers and I’ve been using one of these for years now on various cars. Had to grind the studs a little on one side to fit an application.
