My Honda CR-V 1998 started making a noise that intermediate, it comes and goes. Usually on turns or when the road approaches a hill. Sounds like I'm dragging tin cans. I think it's coming from the front . Everything looks fine under the car. Mechanic can't seem to find noise. The heat shield near the exhaust is not loose.. any ideas ?

have you checked the dust shield behind the brake disc/rotor?? that can make a nice tin can sound, ting..ting..ting.. might have to bend it back away from the disc/rotor.
I'll have to look at it later today...will keep you posted

Making turns or approaching a hill kinda makes me think CV

The other annoying rattles on the '98 I service were the heat shield around the cat, and sway bar links, but the latter was clunking with bumps.

I realize you already covered most of this, and one would hope your mechanic would recognize a torn CV boot, so let us know what you find!

It's Easter week here in Greece where I live so all the car shops are closed till next week..alot of people are telling me it might be the shield from the rotors but I have no idea what that looks like . Iam a 42 year old woman with no idea 😂

I have no idea really what a dust shield is..I'm gonna google it to see .it's also Easter week here in Greece so good luck finding a shop open

They look like this. Note the part numbers may not apply to your vehicle at all -- I'm not sure.

If you look behind each wheel from under the vehicle you can't miss them. The missing part of the circumference is where the brake caliper lives.

If they're rusting I'd just tell your shop to remove and scrap them. Drive awhile and I bet you won't miss them a bit, unless maybe you frequently drive in heavy rain.

Tap/bang by hand and see if it kinda sounds like your rattle. If they don't rattle, I'd just leave well-enough alone

This is on a Subaru but the concept is the same. Index finger indicates the thin sheetmetal plate behind the rotor. Wheel removed in pic, obviously. Note caliper at rear of rotor and resulting cutout in stone guard aka dust shield aka rotor guard aka blah blah blah

As viewed from inside with wheel installed. You can just climb under there and tap with a fingernail or whatever

Tomorrow morning I'll have to check that out.
It's already dark out here now

yes @D60 did an excellent job showing where it is.. had no idea you didn't know what the dust shield was, but at least now you know what it looks like and where it is! :) I had that on my car after I got done replacing the brakes (pads, rotor/discs) guess when I did it my hands pushed on the dust shield causing that ting..ting..ting noise as the rotor/disc rotated/moved. Anyway.. did this noise start after you had the brakes replaced?

Haven't touched the brakes in about a year..the noise just appeared last week out of no where

any update? find anything yet?
Have not had time to take it to a mechanic yet but I got under the car and took everything. Muffler, cat converter, av axles everything nothing seems loose and no noise. That will not help much I know but iam stumped. Seems like it's coming from the rear back right wheel somewhere. You can go over the same road 10 times and it will only do it when it wants too but the noise is like a cooking pan is dangling under the car when it happens. Seems like it's doing it if you accelerate hard on a hill or sometimes in a turn. As if it has something to do with how the weight of the car shifts

My relative’s 2005 CR-V, Japanese specialist put it on the lift and drove it, to duplicate a noise (wheels being driven). Personally never saw that technique and not sure insurance allows it but they duplicated the issue

Next week when I'm off work I'll mention that to the people at the car garage

Update..the sound now has changed and sounds like a marble rolling in the rear from under the car when accelerating after a stop or sometimes during a turn.. sounds like something metal is rolling around under the car but everything looks tight under there
