High perfomance oil filter for big block chevy needed.

Need oil filter for supercharged big block that has over 80 psi pressure when started cold and needs to be kept at about 2,000 rpm’s until it warms up. This pushes oil out the gasket even when tightened a full turn after it contacts the mount. I did oil & filter change when I got the car so I could document maintenance. I bought a Wix filter for a 454 because that was how the ad for the car listed it. It turned out not to match the mounting threads on the engine. So I then got a Wix that was the equivalent to the filter the was on the car, which is a 51515, which is for a Ford engine…. I know it sounds crazy but it fits. I am now going to replace the filter because of the oil dripping on the exhaust & want to find the best filter for this application. since I am not familiar with the inner workings of different filters I am hopeful that someone with that knowledge can help me resolve this head scratcher issue. This was a very expensive Street Rod to build & I want to do the right thing here. Thanks in advance for your interest and guidance. Rod

I recently caught an episode of Engine Masters where they did an oil filter shootout. I think AC Delco and K&N did the best. They tested two different Wix filters and one did better than the other. Can't remember which. This was on a Big Chevy so maybe see if you can find the episode.
I used to build stroker big block Chevy engines for speed boats and we never blocked the bypasses or any other stupid tricks.
I like Baldwin filters very much. They seem to have the most heavy duty can.

The Duramax filter (2001-2016) is a Fram 9100, or equivalent. The DM makes 80 PSI at cold idle. I'm pretty sure the DM filter was an old, high volume BB chevy filter that was revised (thicker can, higher bypass, etc) to deal with the extra pressure.

YMMV.

Do you have the oil filter bypass blocked off?
The WIX 51515 has an internal bypass valve, so I don't think that's the issue.

With 80 psi oil pressure after the filter, the pressure at the filter gasket shouldn't be much higher than 100 psi, and any oil filter should be rated to 200+ psi. Is your oil pressure actually only 80 psi on a cold start at 2k rpm, or is that just as high as your gauge can measure?

I would take @ripcord's suggestion and try a FRAM HP1 Racing. It's got a 500 psi burst pressure and a 22 psi bypass.

Isn't the 51515 just the Windsor-era filter, aka PH8A? In that case you can also run the slightly smaller Mopar filter (51085) for Magnums and the 4.0 and many of the 3.x V6s, and/or the Toyota 51348/FL910S.

But not sure any of that is gonna do any better.

I like the Dmax suggestion the most but the 57202 is an oddball 13/16-16 thread and you should need 3/4-16. I think some Kubota apps are actually 3/4-16? Yeah:

My bad. I thought the dmax filter was a tweak of a classic SBC/BBC fitment.

It kinda rang true with me, too, until I referenced the specs. I think I've walked the same path before but CRS means I can't be sure

I'm referring to this valve (or an adapter that eliminates the valve), not one in the oil filter.

I recall a long time ago, someone posted here (?) about BBC engine failure while running a PF454. IIRC, the filter media broke apart and circulated thru the engine. It took quite a few pages before it was determined that this bypass valve was blocked.

Now if I read the OP more carefully, he said he tried a typical 454 filter but it would not fit. Something about the motor must not be typical BBC.

Wonder if you have a early block that required an adapter to run a spin on filter OR it has a conversion adapter for no reason.

A lot of conversion kits called for 3/4" Ford filters. The lathe cut seal used in these kits are known for leakage & can easily be mistaken for a filter leak.

Is there a aluminum adapter above the filter?

Internal bypass on an oil filter means very little for the total pressure outside of the element. Pump pressure bypass means everything here. The restriction for oil the oil the pump is pushing is upstream. My 86 escort pushed nearly 100psi cold as did my 97 Subaru 2.2L, and neither had gasket issues. (Both cars had aftermarket gauges in them straight to the pressure sender port).

I scrolled through quick but didn’t see any mention of Wix racing filters. You said you had used a standard wix, just get the racing version next time.

I am not convinced that the issue is the filter, but K&N makes a great oil filter, and it is likely that they make one for your application.
