NO is hardly a "low tier" city when it comes to murder and crime. 200 murders in 2011 with near 57 murders per 100,000 people.

DC has improved over the years but is still 17 in 100,000.

Our crime spiked after Katrina, and right off the top of my head, I can think of at least one murder by a Katrinan on a local.

Can't speak to the south as a whole, but as to my little part of it, I'd be interested in knowing the impact of illegal immigration on violent crime. When the economy was hot under Mr. Bush, we were being overrun. Now that the economy is in the tank, it doesn't seem as bad, but I still see a whole lot of non English speakers in court.

Second, I'd be interested in knowing the impact of recidivism. It seems too common to read about guys doing their second or third killing ten or twenty years after their first.

Third, we have a lot of cops shooting people. I don't know how they account for these. Some are justifiable, some would be prosecuted as murder if I were in charge, and some are just bad marksmanship when they shoot a bystander. These killings are on the rise.

Being shot by a cop is probably the biggest risk where I live.

Agree on all accounts.

Of course many are swooning over those illegals so it will be all roses from here.

An NYC cop just posted about shooting first in the not my job thread.

I think this has something to do with it. There were also big studies that followed this up in 2008 & 2012.

It's a shame these articles cost $40 to $50 to download.
