We are talking about metallic salts and esters of metallic salts.

These are componds of metals (zinc, calcium, moly, antimony, magnesium) with sulfur and phosphor.

Some folks sound like they think that there are bits of metallic zinc or other actual metals in the oils. The only actual metal bits are off the machinery as it wears.

What the oil analysis shows as zinc or whatever doesn't differentiate between a zinc atom from the metal or a zinc atom from a zinc & phosphor antiwear oil additive compound. They are indeed very different. (And I can't think of any parts of the engine subject to wear that contain zinc, but I hope you get the idea.)
